While this year’s elections have ended, candidates for next year’s Virginia Senate and House of Delegates seats are already running campaigns.
The recent state redistricting complicates next year’s slate, leading to a new House of Delegates district for Leesburg, redrawn lines for the rest of the county, and space for new candidates to go to Richmond.
As of press date, here are the candidates who have announced they will run on Loudoun’s ballot next year:
Virginia Senate, District 31:
Covering parts or all of the former 13th, 27th, and 33rd districts, the new 31st consolidates much of Loudoun into one district. The area covers Loudoun from Leesburg west, as well as part of Fauquier County.
The incumbent, Jill Vogel, R-31, used to represent the largely western Loudoun 27th district and is currently serving her fourth term. She has not officially announced that she will run for another term.
Also running on the Republican side is former Catoctin District Supervisor Geary Higgins.
On the Democratic side is former Loudoun County prosecutor Russet Perry and Leesburg town councilman Zach Cummings. Cummings has received endorsements from multiple Leesburg politicians with Democrat leanings, including Mayor Kelly Burk and Vice Mayor and Virginia House of Delegates candidate Fernando “Marty” Martinez.
Virginia Senate, District 32:
The new 32nd district covers the eastern tip of Loudoun, including Ashburn and Sterling, and is made up of pieces of the former 13th and 33rd districts.
The current incumbent is John Bell, D-32, who used to represent the 13th district. According to his website, his legislative priorities include strategic gun control, pro-choice legislation, universal preschool, teacher pay raises, environmental incentives and affordable healthcare.
Currently running against him is Greg Moulthrop, a tech startup entrepreneur and self-described “populist conservative.” According to his website, his priorities include limited government, ending universal mail-in voting, police reform, conservation, affordable healthcare and taking Critical Race Theory out of schools.
Virginia House of Delegates, Districts 26 and 27:
The 26th district covers South Riding and parts of Sterling, while the new 27th will represent the rest of Sterling and eastern Loudoun.
Currently, the only announced candidate for the 26th is incumbent Suhas Subramanyam, D-87, whose priorities include lowering the cost of healthcare, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and school funding, according to his site.
The candidates for the new 27th district are both Democrats: Atoosa Reaser, an attorney and Loudoun County School Board member for the Algonkian District; and Kannan Srinivasan, a businessman who serves on Loudoun’s Economic Development Advisory Commission.
Virginia House of Delegates, Districts 28, 29, and 30:
The rest of Loudoun’s Delegates districts cover a wide swath of Loudoun: the 28th represents Ashburn and parts of Sterling; the 29th the town of Leesburg and some areas to the east; and the 30th western Loudoun and parts of Fauquier.
So far, only two Democrats have officially announced campaigns in these districts, as incumbent Dave LaRock has announced a run for the Virginia Senate’s new 1st district.
Incumbent David Reid, D-32, is running for the 28th district. He supports all-day kindergarten, gun safety measures, increasing state funding sent to the county and creating high-tech energy jobs.
Longtime Leesburg councilmember Fernando “Marty” Martinez is running for the 29th. According to his site, he supports increasing affordable housing, universal healthcare, teacher pay increases, protecting the environment and paid family leave for all.
