BRECKSVILLE, Ohio – The mayor’s base salary will rise to $120,510 starting in January 2024, an increase of 3 percent over the mayor’s current salary of $117,000.
The 3-percent matches increases recently given to all city employees, City Council President Laura Redinger said.
The mayor will also receive additional 2-percent increases annually from 2025-2027, under legislation City Council approved in November.
It’s uncertain who will hold the office of mayor when the raises take effect. Mayor Jerry Hruby told cleveland.com last week that he hasn’t decided whether he will seek re-election this November.
“You cannot give an increase in-term for any elected official,” Redinger said during a Nov. 15 meeting of council’s Finance Committee.
Under the city charter, council can approve raises for elected officials no fewer than 120 days before the next municipal election, which is in November 2023.
Hruby is one of the longest-serving mayors in Greater Cleveland, having first taken office in 1988. A 2015 cleveland.com series on mayoral salaries found that he was also among the higher-paid suburban mayors.
The Brecksville charter requires council to review the mayor’s salary periodically. Council’s review included a look at what mayors earn in similar communities.
According to a spreadsheet council used in its review, 2022 base salaries are:
· $169,985 for Middleburg Heights Mayor Matthew Castelli;
· $157,500 for Beachwood Mayor Justin Berns;
· $150,000 for Strongsville Mayor Thomas Perciak;
· $130,998 for Broadview Heights Mayor Sam Alai;
· $108,243 for Berea Mayor Cyril Kleem;
· $108,000 for Bay Village Mayor Paul Koomar;
· $100,524 for North Royalton Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz;
· $83,291 for Richfield Mayor Tom Naylor;
· $82,900 for Lyndhurst Mayor Patrick Ward;
· $82,500 for Pepper Pike Mayor Richard Bain;
· $75,000 for Independence Mayor Greg Kurtz;
· $70,917 for Parma Heights Mayor Marie Gallo;
· $55,000 for Orange Mayor Kathy Mulcahy;
· $14,900 for Seven Hills (part-time) Mayor Anthony Biasiotta.
Biasiotta’s base salary will increase to $40,000 in January, a raise approved by Seven Hills voters in November 2021.
Brecksville council also looked at what Brecksville department heads are earning when considering the mayor’s salary. Redinger said department head salaries range or will range from $85,000 to $120,000.
In addition to an annual salary, the city of Brecksville provides other benefits for the mayor, including:
· $2,100 in longevity pay.
· About $154 a year in premiums toward a $50,000 life insurance policy.
· About $18,693 a year in health insurance premiums. The city pays health insurance premiums for all full-time workers. The mayor contributes another $281 a year toward his insurance.
· At least $11,910 a year toward the mayor’s pension plan under the Ohio Public Employees Retire System. That’s the amount the mayor would normally pay, so the city pays both its portion and the mayor’s portion of pension payments.
· Use of a 2020 Jeep Cherokee.
